A turn-based spin-off of the Clash games

Clash Quest is a free puzzle mobile video game wherein you take over islands via turn-based combat. Developed by Supercell, it’s a unique strategy game that is part of the Clash video game franchise—with predecessors such as Clash of Clans and Clash Royale. Thus, it also features beloved playable characters from them.

Unlike the first two, Clash Quest’s gameplay consists of taking on levels on each island you visit and fighting the enemies you encounter there. Apart from spells, defenses, and even enemies make a comeback in this game, too. Fans of the Clash series would find these familiar

Time for tactics

Similar to Clash of Clans and Clash Royale, your objective in Clash Quest is to defeat each enemy at a level to progress through the game and its story. Using turn-based gameplay mechanics, this app can feel both like a tower defense and match-3 game in one package. This is because you attack by selecting troops with copies next to them to deal devastating blows.

Doing so both gives you a combo attack and a damage multiplier so you need to be clever with how you deploy your units. Once they attack, they disappear—and the remaining troops will move forward on the grid while new ones will fill in the blank spots. Take care not to deplete your units since you’ll lose if you do. You’re only given a set amount for each level.

Aside from strategies, you have to strengthen your characters by either upgrading them or equipping items on them. This part of the game is quite familiar to fans and avid players of the other Clash games. However, the app’s biggest drawback compared with its predecessors is the long wait time for energy refills. Unlike most mobile games, it can take up to an hour for a full restore.

An interesting installment

Overall, Clash Quest is a nice addition to the Clash universe with its unique strategy gameplay mechanics and classic characters and features. The combat feels different but still delivers the same tactical tension you can find in the other two games. However, the long downtime you have to suffer for refilling your energy can be a turnoff if you’re used to the Clash games.

PROS

  • An interesting turn-based combat system
  • Classic Clash characters
  • Old and familiar Clash items and elements
  • Easy and intuitive tutorial

CONS

  • Long downtime for energy refills compared to most games
